It was no secret when the DMTs were awarded the Sue and Derrick Rowlandson Award for Service Excellence in 2005.

The 77 active course websites (Jan. 9, 2007), and more in development, were carefully crafted by DMTs.

Good design is invisible. It presents materials clearly and simply. – Margaret Anderson, Athabasca University

Tucked between the editors and course coordinators are Athabasca University’s Digital Media Technologists (DMTs). A key element of CLDD, the DMTs provide a full range of development and support in multimedia applications and processes in relation to course delivery. Like the graphic designers, the DMTs’ skills allow the reader’s eyes to travel smoothly over the pages, whether in print or online.

The role of the DMT

In order to provide high quality computerized typesetting services the DMTs:

  • apply the principles of visual design and typography to course materials
  • incorporate illustration and graphic material into typographic page format
  • communicate with staff—editors, visual designers, course coordinators—on matters relating to course production
  • ensure the preservation of working files with an emphasis on accurate file management

 Course developers

Please help the DMTs provide quick turn-around service:

  • Create course materials using a standard word-processing software such as MS Word.
  • Submit complete course components on a disk.
  • Provide a printout of your materials (a copy of the version submitted).
  • Include clear, clean versions of the illustration material you wish to have incorporated (preferably your own work, or if not, with correct attributions).
  • Mark minor revisions on a recent copy of the current edition of your course rather than send an electronic copy of the whole component. If there are additions too long to be simply written in, number them on a disk and indicate (using the same numbering system) where they are to be placed (as well as what is to be deleted) on the copy of the current edition.
